The research focus in this area lies on the fundamental and comprehensive semantics and ontology modelling and knowledge based holistic decision making. 

The key concept was derived from comprehensive review and understanding regarding ontology classification, modelling and integration, and further defined as a holistic decision-making framework, which links to smart LoT devices and supported with autonomous decision engine – multi agent software components equipped with domain semantic and ontology reasoning engine. This theoretical framework solves several key scientific problems in smart building / infrastructure sensor-based monitoring, it provides a mechanism to achieve self-learning / self-decision smart IoT devices (OntoBuilding project, sponsored by EPSRC, 2007-2011). The framework has been applied for building energy area, more than 20 papers published in high end relevant journals, which has led to a new theme for Cardiff BIM group, and helped to secure several EU FP7 research projects, e.g. EU FP7 SPORTE2, RESILIENT (Ref: 314671), KNOWHOIEM (Ref: 285229), with total project value in excess of €12M. The framework has been further developed to interface with BIM and high-performance engineering computing research areas, e.g. institutional learning, trying to model institutional knowledge and experiences; combing with big data analytics and machine learning to conduct data and knowledge mining; leveraging VR and large-scale simulation to investigate implicit knowledge to direct explicit holistic design (ontoClowd). Many use cases have been developed to prove concept, e.g. ontoCSC project enables structure engineer to achieve across-domain design, which is safe, green and cost-effective at the same time. The concept has been further applied for water security (Innovate UK), smart district energy (RESILIENT) and green building assessment.
