The research focus in this area lies on the super large-scale high-performance engineering computing, coupling with semantic and ontology based pre-processing linking to the related domain knowledge, machine learning, big data processing and smart optimization algorithms.

The aim is to create a novel and smart computing platform, which is dynamic and self-learning capable, to support super large scale and complex structures, infrastructure and built environment modelling and decision making. The theoretical framework has been applied in several research projects, e.g. OptiCloudBIM (Shanghai R&D fund, total value: ¥1M),  and SportE2 (EU FP7, total value €4.7M), where real time collected sensor data, e.g. temperature, humidity, room usage, and local weather data, were processed in real time utilizing the coupled large scale distributed optimization GA algorithms, with fine-tuned and pre-trained machine learning engine, supported by dynamically allocated Cloud computing resources. The project achieved its highly regarded outcomes, helped the pilot projects in EU to achieve more than 30% energy saving, more than 10 high quality papers were published in the top-tier journals, and it has been widely disseminated, through different news agency, e.g. Euro News, also in Cardiff, Bilbao, Milan local news. The same framework is currently utilised for another research project, REACH - Resilience to earthquake induced landslide risk in china (NERC& NSFC, total value: £1M), to help to achieve resilient urban disaster prediction, mitigation and prevention, with case study in China Wenchun area.
